Symi is a small island, but where you stay can make a big difference to your experience. Each area has its own atmosphere, and choosing the right one depends on what you’re looking for during your stay. Here’s a simple guide to help you decide.
Gialos (Symi Harbour) – The heart of the island

Gialos is the main harbour and the most central area of Symi. This is where you’ll find most of the cafés, restaurants, shops, and activity. Staying here means everything is within walking distance. You can easily go for dinner, a drink, or a walk by the sea without planning anything.
It’s the best choice if you:
- want to be in the centre of everything
- prefer easy access with minimal walking
Keep in mind that it can be a bit more lively, especially in the evenings.
Chorio – Traditional and more quiet

Chorio is the old village, located above the harbour. It’s more residential, more traditional, and generally quieter than Gialos. Here you’ll find narrow streets, local houses, and a more authentic feeling of daily life in Symi.
It’s a great choice if you:
- prefer a quieter and more local atmosphere
- don’t mind walking (there are steps)
- want a more traditional setting
Many properties here also offer beautiful views of the harbour from above.
Pedi – Calm and close to the sea

Pedi is a small bay about 10–15 minutes from Symi Town. It’s peaceful, relaxed, and ideal if you want to be close to the sea. The atmosphere here is slower, with a few tavernas by the water and easy access for swimming.
It’s a good choice if you:
- want a quiet and relaxing stay
- prefer being close to the beach
- are travelling as a family
You can reach Gialos easily by bus or taxi if needed.
Nimborio – Quiet and slightly more secluded

Nimborio is a quieter area located just outside the main harbour. It’s less busy than Gialos but still close enough to reach in minutes. It offers a more peaceful environment, with fewer crowds and a more laid-back feeling by the sea.
It’s a good option if you:
- want to stay near the centre but away from noise
- enjoy a slower pace by the sea
- don’t need everything right outside your door
So, where should you stay?
For convenience and central location → Gialos
For relaxation by the sea → Pedi
For quiet and premium accommodation by the sea, but close to the center → Nimborio
Our recommendation
Most visitors prefer staying in or near Gialos or Chorio, as they offer the best balance between location, atmosphere, and accessibility. If it’s your first time in Symi, choosing a central location usually makes your stay easier and more flexible.
